Montreal Photo Walks

Due to Covid-19 All PhotoWalks are Cancelled Until Further Notice

Montreal PhotoWalks will take you on a fun trip through the historic streets of Montréal, photographing landmarks and sharing tips to help improve your photos.

Take a Montreal PhotoWalk!

“Walkers are ‘practitioners of the city,’ for the city is made to be walked. A city is a language, a repository of possibilities, and walking is the act of speaking that language, of selecting from those possibilities. Just as language limits what can be said, architecture limits where one can walk, but the walker invents other ways to go.”

Rebecca SolnitWanderlust: A History of Walking

If you are a visitor in Montréal for a few days who enjoys photography or a local who wants to  improve their photography:

There are a few options for the  Montreal PhotoWalk. There is an early “Sunrise” PhotoWalk  that takes advantage of blue hour and the golden hour – we will capture the morning light on the empty streets and enable a fresh perspective during  photography prime time. Our morning walk will go through Old Montreal and visit well known landmarks such as Notre Dame Cathedral, City Hall, Place Jacques Cartier and the Old Port. The golden hour (sometimes known as magic hour, especially in cinematography) is a period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the daylight is redder and softer than when the Sun is higher in the sky.

Sunset PhotoWalk

Old Montreal, China Town, the Latin Quarter and the Village

There is a late walk that will start 3 hours before sunset and trek through Old Montreal winding through China Town, up to the  Latin Quarter and on to the Plateau Mont Royal. While every attempt is made to  finish at the prescribed time and places – things happen and we might not reach our end point. A personal creed is to “Expect the unexpected – and recalibrate as necessary” – make the best images in any circumstance – things happen beyond our control and when they don’t go as expected, take advantage of it and find the best creative solution and continue on! It’s only a problem if you make it one!  It is important to be on time and respect our meeting time. The end of all walks, will be an espresso at a neighbourhood cafe to answer any questions and say our good-byes. The start time is also flexible to meet your itinerary. This PhotoWalk can be tailored for 1 person to a group of 6. (Price range from $175 through to $600)

Little Italy and the Jean-Talon Market

Winding our way around Little Italy we will make our way over to the Jean Talon Market and also explore some of the adjoining neighbourhood to arrive back in Little Italy for an espresso. This PhotoWalk is flexible for 1 to 6 participants and we can also tailor the meeting location and start time. (Price range from $175 through to $600)

The St Laurent Blvd Trek!

St Laurent Blvd. is both a diverse and historic street. The street divides Montreal into east and west – and we will make our start in Old Montreal as we zig-zag our way to China Town, then the Plateau, Mille End and finally up to Little Italy where we’ll finish our trek with an espresso.  For 1 to 6 participants – we’ll meet in Old Montreal and our start time is flexible. (Price range from $175 through to $600)

Old Montreal & Downtown

Starting in Old Montreal we’ll walk through Old Montreal and the make our way up to the downtown area and take a walk down Ste Catherine Street taking detours to visit many landmarks and points to take photographs. (meeting points are generally flexible to help you out!) The start time is also flexible to meet your itinerary. This PhotoWalk can be tailored to a couple or group of 6. (Price range from $175 through to $600)

Sunrise Photowalk – Drive Around Edition

First grab photographs on the street of Old Montreal during the blue-hour, and then make our way by car to a great lookout point to capture the waterfront view of Old Montreal at sunrise. Returning to Old Montreal for a few shots, we’ll then head up to a Montreal lookout atop Mont-Royal Park with a great view of the city! We’ll then take a drive over the St Joseph’s Oratory for a few more photo ops! We’ll take a quick detour through Mount Royal Cemetary, and then head back down the mountain stopping at another lookout vantage point for some more shots of the city. We’ll then finish by picking up some bagels in Mille End and heading over to a local cafe for an espresso! This for 1 to 4 people, and includes pickup from your hotel (Price ranges from $175 to $250/person) This PhotoWalk starts before sunrise, and will vary from one day to the next, but will never be shorter than 4 hours.

I’ll touch on composition, metering, lighting, color, shapes,  patterns  and even themes to look for and try in your images. The goal is to show you how take photos that better represent you and your time in Montreal on our “walk-about”.

At the end of our 4 hours plus walk, we will stop in at a cafe for an espresso to finish our journey and review some of the ideas and techniques and I will also answer any lingering questions you may have.

“All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”

Friedrich Nietzsche

Remember to charge your camera batteries, bring plenty of memory cards, your sense of curiosity,   wear comfortable shoes and bring along a bottle of water. I would strongly suggest bringing a tripod for the sunrise start as it will be somewhat dark at the outset during the blue hour. If you don’t have one, I will offer alternate techniques-but a tripod is invaluable (at the same time don’t bring a 25 pound studio tripod – it will feel like 500 pounds at the end of our walk!). I will spend time with everyone answering as many questions as possible! Montreal PhotoWalks is about having fun taking photographs of Montreal and improving your skill-set!
